The ComMod Pilot Network of Excellence is a regional network project funded by EU-ASEAN since September 2013 which objective is to improve animal health surveillance and control within livestock production systems through cross-sectorial dialogue and networking within a One Health approach, involving actors form Agriculture, Veterinary, Public health and Environment sectors. The National Institute of Hygiene and is a core member of the network along with the Department of Animal Health in Vietnam, Kasetsart University (Thailand), Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand), Institute Pasteur Cambodia, National Veterinary Institute (Cambodia), and CIRAD as technical support collaborator.
Within the framework of this EU-ASEAN network and of the ComAcross EuropeAid project implemented by Cirad and partners in Southeast Asia (http://www.onehealthsea.org/comacross), a training course on Social Network Analysis (SNA) was organized from 24th-26th February 2016 at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), 1 Yersin str., Hanoi, Vietnam .
Methods to build and analyze networks now are considered to be special tools in the field of animal health. They enable, for example, the description and quantitative analysis of commercial networks and of interactions between animals (study of contacts between wildlife and domestic animals). They also are used to describe and understand information flows in epidemiological surveillance systems.
The CIRAD AGIRs team uses these approaches in their own research and, aware of their potential, offers training in network data modeling and analysis methods. The first part of the training is an introduction to the « R » software and to Social Network Analysis. This introduction enables participants to familiarize themselves with relational data and associated measures. The second part is an introduction to network modeling techniques. It allows participants to broaden their methodological spectrum. Concrete applications are examined, and participants are invited to come with their own data sets.
The aim is to provide participants with advanced training in modeling and network analysis methods and to provide them an opportunity to test these new methods on their own data sets.
Training objectives:
At the end of the training, the participants will:
Training content
- Introduction to « R », network concepts and social network analysis
- Examples of SNA application
- Node level centrality indexes
- Network level centrality indexes
- Practical using R
